Taun

Ecstatic was not enough of a word to describe how I was feeling. I climb into the transporter and look across to see Samantha climbing in next to me. I was radiating with pride at how she had fought the three Kreechuts. A single female with no armour or abilities taking on three males single-handed. It was a tale to tell our grandnips. Did I just think that?

I lift my wrist clasp and hail the Federation. Sam looks at me with her eyebrows drawn together quizzingly.

A hologram of a Federation officer beams up from my clasp. “This is Lieutenant Groth from the Zolarian Sector who am I addressing and what is your enquiry?”

“This is Taun Dreekoliandris from the township Kreval. I have been on the track of my abducted sister for the last two doons. With the aid of another, I have just captured one of the abductors, a Kreechut. Presently there are sixteen females of different species waiting to be collected from the location where this comm message is being transmitted from.”

“One Kreechut captured sixteen females, I find that hard to believe.”

“There were eleven in total but I had to decimate ten of them in self-defence.”

“Decimate? Are you a Deviad?”

“I am Lieutenant.”

“Right. We’ll send a hovercraft to your transmitted location immediately.”

“Lieutenant. There is one more thing. Have there been any reports of a white-skinned golden-haired human female?”

“No Taun, nothing as of yet. Is that another abducted female?”

“Yes, Lieutenant. We believe a Kreechut is taking her to be exchanged and then the new owner is taking her to be sold at a dark market in an unknown location.”

“We’ll send out a notification to all Federation officers immediately.”

“Thank you, Lieutenant. We are also going in search of her. Can you let us know if you hear of anything?”

“I will Taun.”

I end comms and look at Sam.

She faces me with her arms crossed. “Why didn’t you tell me you had some sort of communicator with you all along?”

“You might not have agreed to show me the trail.”

She shakes her head. “I must admit I was dishonest with you too.” I lift my brow high. Sam hesitates before she speaks. “...I didn’t tell you that I also needed to reach the Kreechuts to get to Katarina.”

“That doesn’t matter we’ll-...”

She raises her hand to stop me speaking. “Please Taun, I need to tell you something else... I had no clue where I was leading you other than the direction in which I saw the vehicle disappear. I’m so sorry. If I’d have known you had an abducted sister then-...”

I mirror her and hold my hand up. My heart feels like it’s about to jump out of my chest. “If we are both being honest then I need to tell you something too... At first, I intended to trade you for my sister.” Her eyes go wide and her mouth drops open. “It was just my initial thought straight after I’d had to kill Hovey to save you.” The look of disappointment in her eyes cuts me deeper than I thought it would.
